Let’s talk for a minute about drum heads, No! Not the ones on the drums but rather the one on the shoulders of the person playing the drums.

From all my years of playing, having good days and bad days at the drums, one thing has become perfectly clear. A clear head (not the one on the drum) is an important part of any drummer’s performance. In my early days I had a lot of bad days resulting from a lack of practice and a lack of confidence.

I recently sat in at a Rock Jam and found my muscles tensing up as I played. I had no warm-up on this jam and it... more

How to pick the best drum teacher for you. Ok so you’re thinking of taking drum lessons. You look online for who is available in your area. The first thing you should do is to decide what it is you want to learn. Drum teachers can be very different in how and what they teach. You need to make sure you link up with an instructor who has an affinity with what it is you want to learn. You wouldn’t seek out a heavy metal rock drum teacher if you wanted to learn jazz drumming. Maybe you are not interested in a career in drumming but would rather just learn... more

What is a drum teacher’s biggest headache when taking on new students for the first time. Well if you asked most drum instructors they think they would agree on the answer to this one. It really isn’t that complicated. I’ve been teaching drums for years and have come to the conclusion that if new drummers just followed the advice given by most drum instructors, they would acquire much greater skills and techniques and do it all in far less time. What I’m talking about here are the same techniques used by a surgeon performing an open heart... more

“How do you get a drummer of your porch? Pay him $10 for the Pizza”. What do you call a drummer who loses his girlfriend? Homeless. Drummer jokes. There everywhere. Don’t get me wrong there are lots of other musician jokes around; it’s just that we drummers seem to take the brunt of these jokes and many of them have to do with us playing to fast or to slow. As the time keeper it is very important that our time keeping is spot on. In my experience there are two really important methods that drummers can use to improve their time keeping. # 1. Get... more

The two levels of drum practice 1. Practice the groove until you know it. 2. Practice the groove until it’s top of mind Many of my students have worked hard learning a variety of rhythms that I have shown them. Unfortunately, at different times when I have asked them to demonstrate certain grooves for me, they can’t deliver. I see them trying to remember how the lick is played only to find themselves at a loss unless I show them once more. The point here is simply, what is the use of learning anything on drums or any instrument, if you... more

The Drummer's Rut! All drummer's have experienced the time when you just feel you are in a rut and not heading anywhere. Sometimes the rut can come from playing a band doing the same songs over and over, gig after gig. This can really drag a drummer down and make him or her wonder where their drumming is headed?

Maybe the band you're in is not growing and you are finding that you are just not able to contribute your ideas to the music because no one wants to try things. Most of us have experienced this dilemma at one time or another. So what can... more

Are you struggling with your drum practise sessions? Use this system and watch how fast you improve!

I call my practise system the BPM system and it has worked for me for a long time, I’ve turned my students on to it and it has worked for them and it can work for you.

You have probably noticed sometimes when you sit down to practise drums that you begin to wonder if you are really improving, or is that paradiddle groove still sounding about the same to you as it has for the past month or two. You have probably also noticed how your mind... more
